Tommy Frew was born with a severe visual impairment and was diagnosed at a young age with depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Yet despite the physical and mental setbacks he suffered, he still became a top hockey prospect in the 1990s. It was not until his diagnosis of the rare immune disorder Epstein-Barr virus that he believed his potential NHL career was over.A few years after giving up on his dream and himself, Frew took a chance and decided to pursue post-secondary education.

He was able to take a half-credit course, and along with regular phone calls from his professor, he passed. Beyond passing the course and going onto graduate, Tommy Frew went on to obtain Masters degree and a job as a teacher. Frew says that his students are a constant reminder to never give up on a dream.

With that being said, Tommy, now 44, has reopened his past goal of playing in the NHL… even if only for a single game.This goal is not just for Tommy Frew - it’s for charity.After coming through these struggles with a renewed sense of passion and purpose, Tommy hopes to prove that anything is possible, despite the challenges of mental or physical health.On his journey, Tommy hopes to inspire others to the cause and ultimately spread good energy into the universe.
